XML in the Corporation Print E-mail

1. Abstract

"XML in the Corporation" introduces the concepts of the XML family of standards from the perspective of what is important to know to choose to explore these technologies further. Subtitled "A Manager's Technical Overview", this course does not attempt to teach the bits and bytes syntax of the standards, rather, key terminology is covered as well as an overview of how the technologies are applicable in a corporate information plan.

Also included is a family picture overview of some of the dozens of XML-based standards and Recommendations and how they interrelate. Attendees leave the tutorial with an understanding of the relationships between XML and other existing information technologies so an assessment can be made of the utility of XML to meet emerging corporate information processing requirements. Pointers to available resources are listed for further research.

5. Synopsis

A lot of hype has surrounded the announcement of XML and its related family of standards. From available information, it can be difficult to assess the impact of these technologies on information processing requirements and the benefits available to be made by their use.

"XML in the Corporation" successfully covers a broad spectrum of issues and perspectives regarding the use of the technologies in the XML family of standards. Facets of the technologies are introduced in sufficient detail to gain an understanding of their applicability in order to assess the consideration of these technologies when reviewing one's corporate information strategy.

As many pertinent subjects are covered to equip attendees with as complete an overview as possible to the depth afforded by the time frame available. The problem domains in which the technology can be deployed are explored as a basis upon which the applicability of the various technologies are then assessed. Essential requirements for successful deployment of these technologies are considered. An overview of numerous W3C and other efforts related to XML gives a big picture of work underway and completed. Historical perspectives regarding how information technology strategies in a corporation have developed over the years are included as an annex to better understand how existing deficiencies are addressed by these new developments.
